Low density development and territorial strategies (LOWDENTER)

Project description: The overall aim of this project is to provide elements for a better understanding of the status of territorial cohesion in the EU. It analyses geography-related disparities and territorial specificities looking at an ensemble of quantitative parameters (e.g.: demographic trends, infrastructural deployment, availability and access to basic services, remoteness) and qualitative assessments (e.g. Territorial strategies and financing instruments). The project directly contributes to the EC Communication on the Long-Term Vision on Rural Areas with quantitative analysis and scenario modelling and to the JRC flagship report ‘From Lonely Places to Places of opportunities”. 

Roles & Responsibilities in the project: 

  • Project leader on the activities in the LUISA Territorial modelling Platform and integration and data analysis of different geo-referenced high-resolution data sources, macroeconomic models and application of innovative methods for the development of territorial indicators especially in rural and remote areas. Statistical mapping of the impact of demographic change for those places and people most vulnerable to demographic change and access and efficiency of essential services. 
  • Coordinating on the JRC inputs to the a Long-term vision for rural areas, including on the effects of demographic change on connectivity and access to services, tourism and policy strategies. 
  • Editor and author: Characterisation of European locations and connections against territorial, social and demographic disparities, focusing on the new concept of “lonely places”. 
  • Contributing to the 8th Cohesion Report, including on the effects agricultural land abandonment and the territorial disparities of the accessibility to broadband networks.
